Web design services for brands in China

A project can cover every step, from research to maintenance after launch. Depending on your needs, we deliver:

How we design and build your website

Every project follows our agile methodology: the work is split into short phases, and you review each phase before the next one starts.

  1. Discovery. We study your goals, your audience and your competitors, and agree on the pages that matter most.
  2. Structure and wireframes. We organize the content so users find what they need quickly, then draw the key pages.
  3. Interface design. We design the look of the website for phones and desktops, and refine it with your feedback.
  4. Development. Our developers build the website in sprints, so you can test it and adjust it as it grows.
  5. Testing and launch. We check the website on phones, tablets and desktop browsers, then put it online.
  6. Follow-up. We fix issues and add features as your business changes.

The discovery step relies on the Core Model approach: read how the Core Model process works.

What makes website design for China different

A website that works well in Europe or the United States can be slow or partly broken in mainland China. Four points change the way it is designed and built.

Hosting and the ICP filing

Hosting in mainland China gives local users the fastest loading, but a company website hosted there needs an ICP filing. The MIIT rules on non-commercial internet information services forbid running such a service in China without a filing, and require the filing number at the bottom of the home page. Hosting in Hong Kong needs no filing and remains a common alternative. Our ICP license and China hosting consulting helps you choose.

Fonts and blocked services

Google Fonts, Google Maps, reCAPTCHA and YouTube embeds do not load reliably in mainland China, and a page can hang while the browser waits for them. Chinese fonts are also heavy, because they cover thousands of characters. On Erno Laszlo’s brand website for China, our developers avoided the plugins and APIs that are blocked in China, and on Cosy Stay, flats appear on Baidu Maps. Our article on why a website does not work in China lists the usual causes.

Phones first

Chinese users browse on their phones: in December 2025, 99.6% of internet users in China went online with a mobile phone, according to the 57th Statistical Report on China’s Internet Development published by CNNIC. The phone layout deserves as much care as the desktop one.

Language and local habits

Mainland China uses simplified Chinese, and a good Chinese version is localized rather than translated word for word. Product pages, payment methods and design habits change too: see our guide to website localization in China and our overview of web design trends in China.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I build a website that works in China?

Start with hosting: a server in mainland China needs an ICP filing, while hosting in Hong Kong does not. Write the Chinese version in simplified characters and localize it instead of translating it word for word. Replace the services that do not load in mainland China, such as Google Fonts, Google Maps and YouTube embeds. Then design for phones first, and test the website from China before launch.

Can a foreign company launch a website in China without a Chinese entity?

Yes. A website hosted outside mainland China, for example in Hong Kong, does not need an ICP filing, so a foreign company can launch it without a local entity. Hosting in mainland China requires an ICP filing, which a company submits with its Chinese business license, as a WFOE or a joint venture does. The right choice depends on your speed needs and your plans in China.

What does the cost of a web design project depend on?

The cost depends on the scope of the project. The main factors are the number of page templates to design, the features and integrations, such as online payment or a connection to a CRM or an ERP, and the number of languages. User research, content creation and the choice between Drupal, WordPress and Symfony also count. Each quote is based on your own requirements.

Do you design websites for both China and international markets?

Yes. Our international team designs websites for the Chinese market, for international markets, or for both. A single multilingual website can serve several countries, as the Design DMU website does. Other brands prefer a separate website for China, like the brand site we launched for Erno Laszlo, which connects to its Tmall store and to Chinese social networks.

Why work with a web design agency based in China?

An agency based in China works every day with the conditions your users face: local networks, Chinese platforms and the rules on hosting. Our Shanghai team includes Chinese and international developers, and QPSoftware has delivered more than 200 projects since 2009, from the websites of Duke Kunshan University and Smiths Interconnect to e-commerce stores and mobile apps.
