Wechat Pay

WeChat Pay is the payment function of WeChat, one of China’s two leading mobile wallets. Because it sits inside the messaging app, a customer who meets a brand in an Official Account, a Mini Program or a QR code pays on the spot. Foreign merchants can accept it from abroad and be settled in their own currency.

What WeChat Pay does, and who uses it

WeChat Pay belongs to Tencent and is operated by Tenpay, Tencent’s licensed payment company. Its reach comes from WeChat itself: Weixin and WeChat had 1,439 million combined monthly active users on June 30, 2026, according to Tencent’s results for the second quarter of 2026. Stripe’s documentation counts more than 800 million WeChat Pay users.

For users, WeChat Pay covers:

  • Payments between people: transfers and red envelopes sent directly in conversations, which is how many users first link a bank card.
  • Payments in stores: scanning a merchant’s WeChat QR code, or showing a payment code at the till, in shops, restaurants, taxis and public transport.
  • Payments online: in WeChat Mini Programs, in Official Accounts, in other apps and on websites.
  • Digital yuan: WeBank, the bank linked to Weixin Pay, is one of the operators of China’s digital yuan (e-CNY).

Foreign visitors can use it too. As of April 2024, China’s government website reported that foreign users could link international cards such as Visa and Mastercard to WeChat Pay and Alipay, with a single transaction limit of 5,000 US dollars and an annual cap of 50,000 dollars.

Payment products for merchants

WeChat Pay has one payment product per scene, each with its own API:

WeChat Pay payment products: Quick Pay, QR Code Payment, Mini Program Payment, Official Account Payment, In-App Payment and Web Payment

  • Quick Pay: the customer shows a payment code and the merchant scans it at the till.
  • QR Code Payment: the customer opens WeChat, scans the merchant’s code, confirms the amount and pays.
  • Mini Program Payment and Official Account Payment: the customer pays inside the merchant’s Mini Program or WeChat Official Account.
  • In-App Payment: the merchant’s own iOS or Android app opens WeChat to confirm the payment.
  • Web Payment: the customer uses WeChat’s Scan feature on a payment code displayed on a web page. On mobile browsers outside WeChat, H5 payment opens WeChat to confirm.

The WeChat Pay documentation for overseas merchants describes each product and its API. Refunds, payment notifications and signatures are part of every integration.

Marketing tools around the payment

WeChat Pay also gives merchants marketing tools: merchant pages aimed at mainland Chinese users, coupons and vouchers deducted at payment, reward points for frequent buyers, official in-store materials, and exchange rate coupons for cross-border merchants.

How a foreign company can accept WeChat Pay

A company based outside mainland China does not need a Chinese entity. With WeChat Pay’s cross-border service, the Chinese customer pays in RMB and the merchant is settled in a foreign currency. Most merchants connect through an institution, a payment company that holds the contract with WeChat Pay, opens the merchant account and pays out the funds; a direct contract with WeChat Pay is only offered in a few markets, such as Hong Kong and the United Kingdom, according to WeChat Pay’s documentation for global merchants. A company with an entity in China opens a domestic merchant account and is settled in RMB.

The technical work comes next: the payment flow of each channel, signed requests, payment notifications, refunds and currency display. Our team handles China payment gateway integration for WeChat Pay, Alipay and UnionPay, and our guide to China payment gateways compares the cross-border routes.

How WeChat Pay differs from Alipay

Alipay is a separate app built around payments and finance, with savings, credit and daily services. WeChat Pay is a function of the app people already use all day to talk, read Official Accounts and open Mini Programs. For a brand that sells inside WeChat, WeChat Pay is the natural choice because the buyer never leaves the app; on a website or an app, most merchants offer both. UnionPay covers shoppers who pay with a bank card. Our article on WeChat Pay and Alipay around the world compares the two wallets in detail.

How QPSoftware can help

QPSoftware has built WeChat Pay into Mini Programs for foreign brands. For Go City, we integrated WeChat Pay into a ticketing Mini Program through Pockyt, the payment partner Go City works with, with one-click refunds in the back office and conversion of other currencies into Chinese yuan. For Ma France, as for our other overseas clients, we connected the Mini Program to the GoAllPay platform, so that payments from the WeChat wallet are transferred to the company’s bank account in France. A client with its own company in China can use a native WeChat Pay merchant account instead. If you want to sell inside WeChat, we can handle your WeChat Pay and Alipay integration from the merchant account to launch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a foreign company accept WeChat Pay?

Yes, without a Chinese entity. WeChat Pay’s cross-border service lets a merchant registered abroad accept payments from Chinese customers, who pay in RMB, and settles the merchant in a foreign currency. Most merchants open their account through an institution that holds the contract with WeChat Pay. A direct contract is only offered in a few markets, such as Hong Kong and the United Kingdom.

Can foreigners use WeChat Pay in China?

Yes. A foreign visitor with a WeChat account can link an international card such as Visa or Mastercard to WeChat Pay. As of April 2024, China’s government website reported a single transaction limit of 5,000 US dollars and an annual cap of 50,000 dollars for these cards. WeChat Pay then works in most shops, restaurants, taxis and on public transport.

Where can customers pay with WeChat Pay?

In stores, by scanning a QR code or showing a payment code; inside WeChat, in Mini Programs and Official Accounts; in other mobile apps, which open WeChat to confirm the payment; and on websites, through a QR code on desktop or a payment confirmed in WeChat on mobile. Each scene is a separate WeChat Pay product, so a merchant integrates the ones its customers use.
